Slow the Flow day

As part of their geography study, Years 5 and 6 had a great day with Andrew from 'Slow the Flow'. Slow The Flow is a charity working to advance the education of the public in Natural Flood Management, Sustainable Drainage Systems and other renewable methods of managing the environment, including the exploration of alternative practices which safeguard the natural environment and its resources in a manner which best fits the specifics of a local geography.

As flooding is a constant feature in Todmorden and the Calder valley, it important that our children understand how the issue can be alleviated and how they can contribute in the future.

The day started by Andrew teaching about natural flood management and how different methods work. Children then made their own illustrations based on models that he had brought in.

Following that, they worked in four different groups to respond to the problems that four different case studies were having with flooding. They then presented their solutions in their groups to the rest of the class.

Finally, they worked on their tables to create leaky dams from natural materials that Andrew had brought in, such as twigs, sticks and moss. Those leaky dams were then judged.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee

We celebrated the Queen's Diamond Jubilee by each class studying a decade of her reign. we created an enormous timeline sharing everything we had learned and had a whole school jubilee picnic.

Raising money

At Shade we like to raise money for lots of different charities. this year we raised money for Children in Need. The Junior Leadership organised the whole day and as well as raising £..... we had lots of fun. We were challenged with recreating Pudsey Bear in as many ways as possible.
