Road Safety

At Shade we encourage the pupils to develop their self awareness of the dangers that roads can present. We have the following sessions from the Local Authority and offer cycling training.

Year 1: Teddy takes a tumble

The session takes up to one hour to present, and encourages pupils to consider their safety whilst travelling in a car. During the session, pupils will:

  • see a crash demonstration using a purpose built 'toy' crash vehicle
  • understand how seat belts keep us safe
  • read through the 'Teddy takes a tumble' story
  • try out a pupil car safety seat or booster cushion on a demonstration car seat

Each pupil will receive an A5 copy of the 'Teddy takes a tumble' book to support parents to reinforce the message at home. Our flexible delivery style allows us to tailor a course to support PSD (Personal and Social Development) modules.

Year 2: Pedestrian skills training

Children aged eight years and above are much more likely to sustain injuries on our roads than younger children. To tackle this problem, we have developed a training package that includes both theory and practical training.

The theory lesson should be delivered by your staff in the week before our trainers follow up with the practical training session. We will provide workbooks on the Green Cross Code for each child to work through.

Year 4: Pedestrian skills refresher training

The training is designed to reinforce the lessons learnt in Year 2, to remind the children of the Green Cross Code and ways of keeping themselves safe whilst out on the highway.

Part of the training will take place in the classroom, where the trainers will engage the children in a question and answer discussion, and show them a DVD. The practical session will take place in areas close to school and encourages the children to look at their own environment, including signs and road markings they might see on their way to school and around the local area

Bikeablility

Years 4,5 and 6 have the opportunity to join– 'cycling proficiency' for the 21st Century. A cycle course that’s fun and gives your child the skills and confidence they need to ride safely on today’s roads.

In Reception and KS1 they have balance bike sessions.
